Presentation

This session explores how vendors manipulate billing, falsify documentation, and exploit weak internal controls to commit invoice fraud—often in ways that appear routine or go unnoticed. Drawing on real-world audits and case studies from the oilfield services industry, participants will learn how to identify red flags, strengthen detection mechanisms, and distinguish between error and intentional misconduct. This practical, field-based perspective will equip attendees with the tools to build stronger oversight and apply fraud principles in complex operational environments.

Rick Roybel, CFE, CISA

Rick Roybal is a seasoned leader in vendor risk management, audit, and fraud prevention with over 20 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. At Matador Resources, he helps drive vendor compliance by ensuring alignment with internal accounting policies and procedures.

Rick’s academic background is as diverse as his professional expertise—he holds a B.A. in Russian, an M.A. in Linguistics, and an MBA in Finance & Accounting. His insights have been published in FRAUD (ACFE) and Internal Auditor (IIA) magazines, and he’s spoken at ACFE chapters around the globe. Rick was recently selected to present at the 33rd, 34th, and 35th Annual ACFE Global Fraud Conferences.
