Walter “Walt” Pavlo, Jr.

Walt Pavlo, Jr. is a nationally recognized expert on white-collar crime, ethics, and the federal criminal

justice system. Over the past two decades, he has become one of the most trusted voices examining how

corporate culture, leadership tone, and ethical decision making intersect with law and business.

As a long-time contributor to Forbes.com, Pavlo has written more than 500 articles for its Investment and Leadership channels, focusing on corporate ethics, financial fraud, and the federal criminal justice system. His deep reporting and commentary have made him a sought-after analyst, earning  appearances on CNBC, Fox Business, and CNN, and features in documentaries such as American Greed, White Collar Convicts: Life on the Inside, and The (Dis)Honesty Project.

Pavlo’s credibility as a thought leader comes not only from research and interviews with hundreds of lawyers, prosecutors, and executives, but also from is own experience inside a major corporate fraud. Early in his career as a senior finance manager at MCI Telecommunications, he became entangled in multi-billion accounting scheme that was part of one of the largest frauds in U.S. history. His subsequent conviction and two-year federal prison sentence profoundly reshaped his perspective on ethics and accountability. Out of this experience came his acclaimed book Stolen Without a Gun, co-authored with Bloomberg journalist Neil Weinberg, which has become a staple case study for business and law programs across the country.

Following his release, Pavlo transformed his story into a platform for corporate and educational reform. As president of Prisonology LLC, he founded a  consulting and expert-witness firm that assists criminal defense attorneys and federal judges in understanding Bureau of Prisons policies and sentencing procedures. The firm draws on the expertise of retired federal officials and probation officers to train legal professionals, corporations, and public defenders. His insights into the realities of the U.S. justice system have made him a leading advocate for criminal justice reform and ethical  leadership in business.

Pavlo’s influence extends far beyond journalism. He has lectured at more than 100 universities and professional forums, including the FBI Academy in Quantico, New York University School of Law, and top MBA programs across the United States. For over a decade, he has co-led newhire training at KPMG with its partner in charge of forensic accounting, where his sessions consistently receive top evaluations. His presentations — known for lending humor, candor, and hard-earned lessons — place audiences inside real-world ethical dilemmas, helping executives understand how pressure,  opportunity, and rationalization can lead good employees astray.

Pavlo’s talks focus on the human and organizational factors that contribute to misconduct: tone at the top, professional skepticism, and the critical role of culture in preventing ethical breakdowns. He regularly delivers keynote addresses to major corporations, accounting and law firms, and professional associations such as the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) and the American Institute of CPAs. Walt Pavlo holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from West Virginia University and an MBA in Finance from Mercer University. He is also a 2014 Journalism Law Fellow at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.
